And they surely do. But the carnivores usually target herbivores, as this makes the food chain sustainable. By the way, one of the standard readings of the Torah (e.g, by Rashi and Maimonides) is that humans were vegetarians before the flood. The permission to eat animal flesh is in Gen. 9:2-4; it is seen as a compromise solution because of degradation of humanity and concession to its weaknesses. Maimonides says we paid for it by dramatic shortening of our lifespan, so it is fair: a life for a life.
