Shakespeare is different from the Latins. His plays are still performed and, I hope, will be, all over the world. Thus, every tongue needs a serviceable translation, and if the next one is at least incrementally better, so much the better. If I fail, the situation will simply revert to the status quo. If I succeed at least in part, and I hope for nothing else, somebody might pick up the challenge and undertake a further attempt.
In fact, I can be of service to Shakespeare even if I do not move the cause from where it is now, because the new Russian Hamlet could attract more attention to Shakespeare.
